Compassion & Hope in Unexpected Pregnancy

A conversation with Jean-Paul Beran on The Thriving Family Podcast

A couple of years ago, I had the privilege of sitting down with Jean-Paul Beran of Focus on the Family Canada to talk about my journey from family medicine to Pregnancy Care Canada and what I learned over those years about unexpected pregnancy support and walking alongside women and families facing difficult decisions.

The conversation was recently released, and as I listened to it again, I was reminded of something I continue to believe deeply: kindness, compassion, and practical support can help people find hope in challenging circumstances—and begin to envision a future that fear may be making difficult to see.

Throughout my years in medicine and pregnancy care, I saw how easily fear can narrow our vision. When someone is facing an unexpected pregnancy, what feels overwhelming in the moment can make it difficult to imagine that circumstances might change or that a different future could be possible.

Sometimes one of the most meaningful things we can offer is simply the space to slow down, feel heard, receive accurate information, and know that we are not alone.

In this conversation, Jean-Paul and I reflect on some of the experiences that shaped my understanding of compassionate care and the importance of walking alongside people during vulnerable and uncertain moments.

Although this conversation was recorded during my years with Pregnancy Care Canada, the principles we discussed reach well beyond unexpected pregnancy. How we respond to someone who is afraid, uncertain, or struggling to see a way forward matters.

Compassion doesn’t require us to have all the answers. Sometimes it begins by being willing to listen, to walk alongside, and to help someone see that hope may still be possible.
